Switch to Octopus Energy using my referral link and you’ll receive £50 free credit towards your energy bills.
I’ve been an Octopus Energy customer since 2022 and still use them today. If you’re thinking of switching, here’s how the referral offer works and how to make sure you receive your £50.

Current Octopus referral offer
£50 free energy credit
Switch to Octopus Energy using my referral link and you’ll receive £50 credit after your switch is complete and your first Direct Debit payment has been successfully taken.
Octopus Energy operates a refer-a-friend scheme that rewards existing customers for introducing new customers.
Although people often search for an Octopus Energy referral code, the offer normally works through a personalised referral link rather than a traditional voucher code.
When you follow my referral link, Octopus can track that you’ve been referred and apply the £50 credit to your account once you’ve met the qualifying conditions.
How much do you get for an Octopus Energy referral?
For a normal domestic energy switch, the current reward is £50 energy credit for the new customer.
Octopus’s standard refer-a-friend scheme also gives the existing customer a referral reward.
The £50 isn’t paid into your bank account. It’s added as credit to your Octopus Energy account, reducing the amount you need to pay towards your energy usage.
When will I get my £50 Octopus credit?
You won’t receive the £50 immediately after signing up.
Octopus says the new customer needs to be supplied by them and have made their first successful Direct Debit payment before the referral reward can be added.
Octopus says this typically takes around four weeks from joining, although it can take longer if something delays your switch.
Once credited, you should be able to see the £50 referral payment in your Octopus account.
My experience with Octopus Energy
I switched to Octopus Energy in 2022 and have remained a customer ever since.
One of the things I like about Octopus is the range of tariffs available. I’m an EV owner, so being able to take advantage of much cheaper electricity overnight makes a significant difference to the cost of charging at home.
I’ve also found the online account and app straightforward to use, and Octopus offers some useful extras through its rewards programme.
That’s not to say Octopus will automatically be the cheapest supplier for everybody. Energy prices and tariffs change, so it’s always worth comparing the quote you’re offered with alternatives.
The £50 referral credit is a nice extra, but I’d still make sure you’re happy with the tariff before switching.
Do you need a smart meter?
You don’t necessarily need a smart meter simply to become an Octopus Energy customer.
However, some of Octopus’s more interesting smart tariffs require one.
That includes tariffs aimed at customers with electric vehicles and households that want to take advantage of electricity prices that vary depending on the time of day.
If you’re considering one of these tariffs, check the eligibility requirements before switching.
Can existing Octopus customers use a referral code?
The standard referral offer is primarily designed for people switching to Octopus Energy.
If you’re already an Octopus customer, you generally can’t simply use another customer’s referral link to repeatedly claim referral credit.
Octopus does state that some existing customers who haven’t previously received referral credit may be eligible in certain circumstances, so it’s worth checking directly with Octopus if that applies to you.
Can I get the £50 if I use a comparison website?
If you want the referral reward, use the referral link when you sign up.
Signing up through a third-party comparison website may mean the referral isn’t tracked.
You can still compare prices elsewhere first. But if you’ve decided Octopus is right for you and want the referral credit, return to the referral link to complete the eligible switch.
Is Octopus Energy worth switching to?
I’ve stayed with Octopus since 2019, so I’ve clearly been happy enough with the service to remain a customer.
For me, some of the main positives are:
a good choice of tariffs
particularly interesting options for EV owners
an easy-to-use app and online account
smart tariffs for people able to shift their electricity usage
additional rewards and offers
no need to call somebody every time you want to manage your account
But don’t switch purely because somebody is offering you £50.
Get a quote, compare the tariff against what you’re currently paying and then make your decision.
If Octopus is competitive for your household, the £50 referral credit is an added bonus.

Your referral will be tracked through the link and, once you’ve completed the qualifying requirements, your £50 will be added to your Octopus account.

Octopus Energy referral code FAQ
What is the current Octopus Energy referral offer?
New domestic customers who qualify can currently receive £50 energy credit when switching through an eligible Octopus Energy referral link.
Do I need to enter an Octopus referral code?
Usually, no. The referral is contained within the personalised link. Follow the referral link and complete your switch through it.
How much free credit do I get?
The current domestic referral reward is £50 Octopus Energy account credit.
When will my £50 be added?
Octopus requires your supply to have started and your first successful Direct Debit payment to have been made. Octopus says referral credit typically arrives around four weeks after joining, although delays to the switch can make it take longer.
Is the Octopus £50 referral offer still available in 2026?
Yes. The £50 domestic referral reward is currently available as of August 2026.
Can I use a referral link if I’ve already started switching?
It’s much safer to use the referral link from the beginning of the sign-up process. Don’t assume a referral reward can be added retrospectively.
Does using a referral link make my tariff more expensive?
The referral reward is account credit for qualifying customers. You should still check the tariff and quote offered to you before deciding whether to switch.
